Inspiration : Hammock ideas

INSPIRATION:

Ernesto Neto

We managed to get hold of some of the rope, and also ordered some glow in the dark rope too. We started too look at different textile techniques we were not familiar working with such as knitting, weaving and different ways of tying ropes. We took our inspiration from hammocks, and wanted to create something for a viewer to sit in and relax on the rooftop. Mark and Kate weren’t too keen on the idea, and felt that this could also be hard to make in the time space due to all the health and safety risks on the rooftop. And with having nothing to hang the hammock too… we would either have to make a structure to support it or buy one that would cost a lot of money between the two of us along with enough rope to make the hammock. So we went back to the drawing board to come up with a more appropriate idea on a cheaper budget.

Inspiration: Materials

I come across this really unique material on Pinterest which I thought  could have been intersting to use on the rooftop due to its sustainability to weather with it being concrete but also being transparent which fits in with the theme of work i would have like to have gone with.

Transparent concrete, by Mexican students Joel Sosa and Sergio Omar Galván, is 30% lighter than normal concrete and lets through 80% of the light.

Materials

Week 3:

Mark and Kate kindly supplied the group with materials and resources appropriate for us to use on the rooftop from grumpys the art shop. In our individual groups, me and Hannah still being apart of the creating a sensational experience we all decided the materials we though would be appropriate for the shelter we wanted to make. But when we then realised that me and Hannah were going to be working on our own and the rest of the group had taken most of the materials, this then ended us costing a lot of money as we had to go out and buy our own resources.

Manifesto

Week Two:

In the second week, as a group we had to come up with a manifesto identifying philosophies and networks adaptable to our choice of topic. For this task I had decided to work with a different group of people that I felt I got on much better with to create the presentation for our manifesto.

When presenting our manifesto to the group, Mark and Kate felt that from the ideas I come up with that I was more suited to the “creating a sensational experience” group I was previously in before hand. So taking there advise I moved back to this group. However, after several meet ups and discussions about the work, with there already being a large amount of people in this group. I felt that this actually turned out to be a massive negativity to me, as I was looking forward to working in a group together with people I had not worked with before, yet they told me and Hannah there was too many in the group already so therefore we ended up working together on our own which we had already collaborated previously in the last project.

This wasn’t too much of a problem to me, as me and Hannah work well together and have many similar interests but felt like the whole idea of unit x was to work out of your comfort zone and attempt to work as a group with people you were not used to previously.

UNIT X: Reinterpret,Reinvent,Reimagine:Rooftops

Week One:

In the first week of unit x we were split up into several different groups so we had a chance to work and get to know different people from other courses that we hadn’t previously worked with before. I really enjoyed this as it meant I could be pushed out of my comfort zone that I beforehand had in my textiles area and learn to grasp the techniques and ideas of other courses such as graphics, interior design and 3d modelling.

Within this session we began to brainstorm ideas in which we could come up with ideas for the rooftop installation. We began to identify different contexts that could be relevant to the rooftop installation.

Some of the key themes we come up with as a group were, creating a sensation, escapism, creativity, practicality, efficiency, textures, pushing the boundaries with old and new technologies to create a unique experience for the viewer.
